Thoracic Surgery

The general thoracic surgery section of the division of cardiothoracic surgery is made up by three American Board of Thoracic Surgery-certified dedicated non-cardiac thoracic surgeons Dr. Richard J. Thurer, the section chief Dr Dao M. Nguyen, and Dr. Nestor Villamizar. The thoracic surgery section has grown tremendously in the last 4 years with our three surgeons provide clinical consultative and operative services at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer center (Medical Campus and Deerfield Beach facilities), Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital and the Miami VA Medical Center. The scope of practice spans from surgical and non-surgical therapy for common benign chest diseases to the most complex thoracic oncologic conditions. Our surgeons provide the most up-to-date surgical procedures and state-of-the-art treatment modalities for all disease conditions of the chest. Minimally invasive thoracosopic lung resections including lobectomy or sublobar resections are common daily practice. Complex surgical procedures such as radical pneumonectomy, sleeve lobectomy, extrapleural pneumonectomy, complex chest wall resections are frequently performed by our surgeons at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Our thoracic surgeons are actively involved in evaluating patients with cancers of the chest and participating in decision-making process of how best to treat these complex and often challenging cases. Multimodality therapy for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer is offered in conjunction with thoracic medical oncologists and radiation oncologists as part of our surgeons’ armamentarium in treating advanced lung cancer.
